The centenary of the birth of Andrei Sakharov

Andrei Sakharov (1921-1989) - is the co-inventor of the Soviet hydrogen bomb, who, seeing the effects of nuclear testing, became an opponent of nuclear weapons. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his extensive human rights work. To honor the actions of the Russian activist, the European Parliament established the prize for individuals, groups and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the defense of freedom of thought. In more than 30 years, the Sakharov Prize has honored 44 recipients.

The laureates of the prize include dissidents, political leaders, journalists, lawyers, civil society activists, writers, mothers, wives, minority leaders, a group fighting against terrorism, peace activists, an activist involved in the fight against torture, a cartoonist, long-term prisoners of conscience, a film director, the United Nations, and even a teenager fighting for the right to education.

As part of the watchdocstogether.eu project, in the coming months we will be introducing you to both the winners and the nominees of the Sakharov Prize.
