A maritime school without access to the sea - an archival analysis of colonial dependencies between Russia and Ukraine.
Assembled from educational archives, Spivak’s film examines a quintessentially Soviet paradox: the Kiev Naval Academy, a military institution situated in a city with no access to the sea. Adding a sharp contemporary edge is the story of the academy’s cruiser “Kiev” - the sister ship of the “Moskva,” the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet sunk by Ukrainian forces in 2022.
