Let the Others Deal with Love

29' 2001
dir.: Ruben Östlund

One of the director's first films: Östlund directs his lens at his friends, commenting on everyday situations with gallows humor.

"Let others deal with love," says one of the film's characters, in this intimate and melancholic portrait of the end of youth. In this early, film-school documentary, Ruben Östlund directs the camera at his closest friends with whom he went skiing. "I had a strong desire to make a film about you... I don't quite know why," confesses the director, looking into the camera lens. Although, on the surface, during these trips to the Alps, "life looked as it should," the director’s typical precision culls minor gestures and awkwardness. Wrestling by the lake and conversations about Star Wars figurines intertwine here with intimate confessions and dreams about the future. An excellent study of emotions on the threshold of adulthood, showing how the style of a filmmaker was born, who, like no other, extracts black humor from everyday situations.
