Family Again

60' 2002
dir.: Ruben Östlund

Östlund, with his characteristic nonchalance, tries to reconcile divorced parents - which, of course, brings unexpected results.

Twenty-three years after his parents' divorce, Ruben Östlund uses the camera to try the impossible: to bring his mother and father closer together again. But the attempt to recreate the family leads to painful confrontations. This personal project, made while still a student, turns into a film vivisection of family relationships. Östlund observes, but also initiates meetings with tremendous emotional power. He filters conflicting memories through the camera and tries with childlike sincerity to understand why things turned out the way they did. There are many painful confessions in this film, but there are also surprising moments of tenderness. "Family Again" is a brave and honest story about the desire for intimacy, about memories that divide instead of bringing together, and about how adult children can long for something that may never have existed.
