When rising sea levels flood her home, Lokhi joins the swelling ranks of climate refugees who crowd the streets of the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka - the fastest growing city in the world. In the lens of Spanish filmmakers, it evokes the noir images straight out of “Blade Runner.”
A film about our future that is already unfolding into reality. When rising sea levels flood her home, Lokhi joins the growing ranks of climate refugees crowding the streets of Bangladesh’s capital. She soon finds a place to sleep and begins searching for work. The film’s second protagonist, a journalist, documents the stories of people like Lokhi, trying to draw attention to the looming catastrophe. In the coming years, Bangladesh is expected to have at least 30 million refugees whose homes will vanish beneath the water. Most, like Lokhi, will head to Dhaka, the fastest-growing city in the world, which, through the lens of the Spanish filmmakers, becomes a character in its own right. The slums where the city’s new residents seek refuge stand side by side with gleaming modern architecture. Yet the outlook here is the color of storm clouds as towering skyscrapers and tangled overpasses in the pouring rain conjure images straight out of “Blade Runner.”
