Cordillera of Dreams

Cordillera of Dreams

85' 2019
dir.: Patricio Guzmán

After years in exile, Patricio Guzmán returns to Chile to observe the changes in his homeland.

In the third instalment of his trilogy on memory and exile, Chile’s master documentarian juxtaposes the turbulent past of his homeland with the grandeur and calm of the mountain range that surrounds Santiago, the capital city of Chile. He talks to people for whom the stone colossus has become a source of inspiration in their resolution to take action and put up resistance. These writers, artists and scientists recall the gloomy years of dictatorship and the hope that, against all odds, kept them dreaming of better times. With Guzman’s excellent cinematography, the film illuminates paradoxes behind the idealized image of the mountain range - seemingly so close, yet inaccessible to most of the country's inhabitants. Looking into the past, which invariably determines the social landscape of the country, the Chilean filmmaker awaits the change that simply must come one day.
